Here's the situation. 3rd date with a girl/guy you really like. You invite them over to your place for dinner and movie. You cook then move over to the couch for the movie.
What movie do you watch...what's the best date movie?

Avoid: chick flicks, romantic comedies. (And, for the love of all things holy, don't want "Love Actually" unless you want a crying lady on your couch.)
Classics like the aforementioned "Princess Bride" are fun. So is "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". (Of course, I have no idea if that resonates with you. There could be an age gap here.)
Comedies, (but nothing too gross) and action are a good idea. If you've discussed a movie that s/he has mentioned they'd like to see but haven't, that's probably best. It shows you've been paying attention. (Foreign and indie flicks are good, but avoid anything with subtitles.)

Interesting scientific fact (I'm full of those): Scientifically, the best date movies, if you are intending on having sex afterward, are action movies. It is easier to go from the adrenaline rush of the movies to the adrenaline rush of foreplay. Romantic movies are actually quite sedating, and make you feel good (unless it's one of those depressing dramatic romances), but your body and mind are not in a state of high arousal.
Obviously there are more reasons to go on a date than to get laid, and I'm not saying that the only reason to watch a movie is for the sex afterward, but in case that is something that both you and your partner are planning, a good action movie or thriller will get you horny quicker than a romantic comedy.
That being said, I also like vampires movies (I have a thing for vampires), so taking into account if your partner particularly likes a certain actor, or genre of movies, maybe the actor/character can help get your partner aroused and make your job easier. Maybe?

oohlookasquirrel is not the only chick who hates chick flicks. I recently wrote a post about date movies - here are my top 5:

I just recently came across a website narrows down movie searches to a science: Jinni dot com.
Jinni zeroes in on what you want with real-time suggestions. Just input multiple phrases or a single word for the movie or TV show that you'd like to watch. Are you looking for a chick flick with action and comedy, or how about a "good vs evil" plot that's suspenseful? Many combinations to choose from!

I hate chick flicks. I can't be the only girl who does. I think a comedy is the best bet universally. Probably not something with toilet humor or too much sexual humor unless you know the person won't be offended. If not, those summer blockbuster action movies (think Spiderman) usually have something for everyone.
Everyone loves the Princess Bride, right? I think that's a pretty safe bet because there's plenty of humor but there's enough of a love story that you would please those who love romantic comedies.
How about a horror movie? Something scary would be great to encourage some more physical contact. Oh, and Shawn of the Dead is a pretty great zombie movie that girly girls might even like.
If you're up to the 3rd date, you should have some idea of what the person is like. Or ask them what types of movies they like and dislike a day or two before the date when you're asking if they have any food allergies or if they have an undying hatred of raw tomatoes or something like that. Or just have your DVD collection ready and let your date pick something. Or rent a few of them just in case.

Oh wow, personaly, I hate most of these suggestions, but I've been told I'm not a typical girl many times, so... maybe that's it. My bofriend and I had a great time watching Inglorious Basterds, Crank 2, and some old-school westerns.
One I would definately reccomend is Wall-E, it's hilarious and adorable, but not so much that it's painful for guys. Other than that, I'd say ask the other person if there's anything they'd like to see or what genres they like and don't like.

My favorite date movies are....
1. True Romance
2. There's something about Mary
3. Love Actually
Date movies have to have a nice mix of comedy, lovin, and maybe some action too. Anything too cheesy (i.e.- the notebook) is just awkward and weird unless you're already in a relationship.

Jerry MacGuire, hand's down. Works 80% of the time, every time.
Seriously tho, it's pretty much the perfect date movie...it's got everything.

It seems that every girl is down to watch the Notebook at least once a week, so that usually works. If you don't know what the girl likes yet (maybe she loves action films and you don't know yet) then I would stick to something that doesn't take much thought. Stay away from any movie with politics, too much action, or takes a ton of thought. A good movie is something that has some humor but for a first date I wouldn't go straight for the Stepbrothers, Old School, etc...those are more dirty, college guy movies. Girls love them but they might feel weird watching them with someone they don't know that well because of the type of jokes.
Ben Stiller movies are always great. Meet the Parents and Along Came Polly are perfect. Also that movie with Ashton Kutchner and Cameron Diaz where they get married in Vegas...that's a perfect one too. Putting on a tv show like The Office or SNL is a safe bet also
