Honestly--- if you think there is zero chance they will ever get back together, and you seriously can NOT live without the person, then I think you should follow your heart and date the ex. Unless there's some horrid back story, the friend should be able to get over it.

There's no point breaking up with someone and then telling everyone "HEY! He's not mine anymore... but HANDS OFF!"
